SAKATAH

  • Faribault
Although Faribault is only an hour’s drive down I-35 from the Twin Cities, Faribault has retained the charm of a small rural town, especially downtown. A walk through the mall-style downtown area is a delight for those who enjoy the look of beautiful old brick buildings that are the charm of southern Minnesota.
Faribault, which isn’t that small when you count a population of nearly 17,000 persons, straddles two rivers, so be prepared for unique cliff-like views and the sound of running water.
Make your first stop the Faribault Area Chamber of Commerce building at 530 Wilson Ave., just southwest of the junction of Hwys. 21 and 60.
The city has a half-dozen parks offering all kinds of recreational opportunities, plus River Bend nature Center that boasts over 600 acres on the Straight River off 5th St. S.  on the east side of town. Enjoy a trail system through wetland/ prairie/forest areas and stop at the interpretive building.
Sakatah Lake State Park is right along the trail (about 1/3 of the way to Mankato) with camping sites and plenty of recreational opportunities and nature programs.
