CANNON VALLEY

  • Cannon Falls
Cannon Falls is big enough to offer a wide choice of lodging, dining and shopping, but small enough to evoke that small-town feeling. Cannon Falls is only a half-hour from the southern Twin Cities, yet it is clearly a town of its own and not a young suburb. There’s plenty of woods surrounding the town, “a river that runs through it,” a beautiful park complete with dam and opportunities for other recreational activities, including canoeing or tubing. Save time to walk the streets to enjoy historic buildings, homes and churches.

Tourist Info:
• Red Wing
With a population in the five digits, a townsite right on the Mississippi River and a rich history of pottery-making, Red Wing offers the full-meal deal for a trail town. Not only are there more than a dozen lodging facilities and probably twice that number in restaurant choices, but there are all kinds of shopping experiences and more antiques shops than anyone could visit. Not only has the downtown retained its historic look, but the birthplace of Red Wing pottery (just  a short ride from  downtown) still turns out vessels the old-fashioned way. Red Wing enhances its river location with several parks; and it can be viewed high atop one of the highest hills around. To top it off, Red Wing has the kind of classy cultural offerings many big cities would envy.
